Who should be looking after me?
General surgical, colorectal and upper gastrointestinal specialty care should be provided by consultant surgeons holding substantive NHS posts. Where possible, subspecialty and organ specific surgery should be carried out only by surgeons who have a declared interest in performing such procedures.
They should also have sufficient experience of and continued high volume exposure to these techniques. This is particularly important with regard to the increasing use of complex laparoscopic surgery.
If you don’t know, ask your surgeon:
- Where they do most of their work
- How many times they have done your procedure and
- How many times they did it last year
- Where you will be looked after
