Introduction
The pancreas is an abdominal organ intimately related to the biliary duct system and the outflow of the stomach (duodenum). It is surrounded by major blood vessels and contains ducts which drain bile and pancreatic juice.
Its functions are to aid digestion (particularly of protein containing foods) and to regulate blood sugar levels by the production of insulin. Although the condition of diabetes is common, well recognised and managed by specialist physicians, the important position of the pancreas and its other functions if impaired, make it of critical importance to the general surgeon.
