Liver Cysts
Cysts of the liver and other benign conditions
The most commonly encountered benign conditions of this kind are found during scanning of the liver and abdomen by CT or ultrasound, usually for reasons completely unrelated.
By far the majority (simple cysts and haemangiomata) require no attention to be paid to them unless they are symptomatic or there any is doubt about their true benign nature. Some conditions do require intervention by either surgical removal or radiological drainage.
Conditions encountered
- Simple Cyst
- Haemangioma
- Adenoma
- Focal Nodular Hyperplasia
- Hydatid Cyst
- Liver abscess (reflecting infection within the gastrointestinal tract)
- Amoebic abscess
Symptoms
- Abdominal Pain
- Nausea
- Poor Appetite
- Fever
- Jaundice
- Cyst rupture
- Bleeding
Treatment
Where an abnormality is found in the liver with radiological imaging and symptoms are encountered, surgical resection of the affected part may be undertaken.
Up to 75% of the liver may be removed at operation although such a large amount is rarely necessary to treat such benign conditions satisfactorily.
