Colorectal Surgery
Colorectal surgery is the treatment of conditions of the colon, rectum and anus. It is broadly divided into two main types. These are “large bowel” (colon and rectum) and “anal” surgery. A colorectal surgeon will perform both types of surgery regularly. Large bowel surgery treats conditions of the “pipe-work “of the gastrointestinal tract. This id usually for conditions such as cancer, diverticular disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Operations are usually major, performed under general anaesthetic and involve the removal of a section of the bowel and its rejoining (re-anastomosis). These operations may be performed in a traditional open or a laparoscopic fashion. Surgery almost always requires an inpatient stay.
Anal surgery is more minor and is used to treat conditions such as haemorrhoids, fistula and fissure using a variety of techniques. Surgery is usually performed as a daycase.
