Laparoscopic Upper GI Surgery
All upper gastrointestinal surgical procedures are amenable to treatment by laparoscopic means and in many cases these operations are accepted as the “gold-standard” when compared to conventional open surgery. The methods employed for each type of operation are similar but vary in complexity.
Laparoscopic upper gastrointestinal surgery has been shown in trials to reduce post operative pain and length of hospital stay as well as to reduce complications and promote an earlier return to normal activities.
The laparoscopic approach to upper gastrointestinal surgery is fully endorsed in the UK by NICE. The technique involves the insertion of a laparoscope (camera) into the abdominal cavity along with a variety of surgical instruments through a number of small port-sites.
The organ to be treated (most commonly the oesophagus, stomach or gall bladder) is freed from its attachments, its blood supply is divided where necessary and the resection or repair performed using a variety of stitches, clips, staples or meshes.
