Umbilical (Belly button) Hernia

A swelling at or around the umbilicus made up of the lining of the abdominal cavity that has pushed through a defect in the abdominal wall. It is covered by a thin layer of fat and skin.

The weakness is created by the disappearance of the umbilical cord shortly after birth. It usually contains fat but other intra-abdominal structures may be involved.
